The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in
November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National
Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development
(MHRD), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational,
Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General
and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level.
It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic
Education Programmes (OBE).Government of India through a gazette
notification vested NIOS with the authority to examine and certify
learners registered with it upto pre degree level courses whether
Academic, Technical or Vocational. Association of Indian Universities,
vide letter No . EV/11(354)/91/ 25 July, 1991 issued Equivalence
of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination of NIOS.
The Regional Centre, Kochi of NIOS was established in 1998. It
is the second Regional Centre of NIOS in South India. This Regional
Centre is stationed in Kochi which is known as “The Queen of the
Arabian Sea”. Kochi, previously known as Cochin is one of the
five Corporations in the state of Kerala. The State Kerala is
known as “God’s Own Country”. The Regional Centre, Kochi was extending
student support services to the students in the states Kerala,
Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry (Pondicherry). A new regional
Centre at Chennai has been opened for Tamilnadu and Puducherry
recently. Now, Kochi region will be looking after Kerala and Lakshadweep
This Regional Centre has established 254 Study Centres consisting
121 Accredited Institutions (AIs) for Academic courses, 68 Accredited
Vocational Institutions (AVIs) for Vocational Courses and 65 Accredited
Agencies (AAs) for Open Basic Education. Out of 121 AIs, 48 are
offering Malayalam Medium and 6 Urdu Medium too.
The region has registered a total enrolment of 26,978 for the
current year with a cumulative enrolment of 1,00,981 learners
for the past five years. This is one among the Middle level regional
centre in terms of total enrolment and number of Study Centres.
Regional Centre, Kochi is the 3rd largest Regional Centres of
NIOS in terms of Vocational enrolment.
